    '93 Touring - M52 Turbo Build Thread

    Alright everyone here we go.

I picked up a super clean 93 touring a couple years ago with a 1.8L M40 that barely revs past 4000rpm. I also picked up a pretty clean M52B28 engine + ZF trans off of Facebook last year that I'm planning to slab and turbo on and swap into it.

Goal: Daily driver with ~325 whp (target, with room to grow).

My only engine rebuild experience is rebuilding an M10B20+drivetrain for my recently sold 2002, so I have a lot to learn on turbo setups and the electronics side of the house.

    High level plan:
    • Engine "rebuild"
      • Replace all wear items/rubber/hoses/gaskets etc:
        • Belts
        • Hoses
        • All gaskets
        • Water pump
        • Thermostat
        • Timing chain guides and tensioner
        • Vanos rebuild
      • Swap out the headgasket. I picked up an Elring with no spacer, I feel like I've gotten conflicting messages on whether a spacer is needed or not
      • ARP head studs
      • Probably going to weld the oil pump nut
      • Picked up an e34 pan + oil pickup + dipstick/tube
      • M50 intake
      • NOT planning to touch the head at all, so stock M52 cams (for now)
      • I've gotten some advice to open up the gap on the second set of piston rings. I've read ~.019" gap on the top and .001-.002" larger gap on the bottom ring
    • AC
      • E36 compressor
      • Everything else e30, although my car did not come with AC so I'm sure this will be a headache
    • Drivetrain
      • ZF trans
        • Maybe swap out shifter detents, otherwise leave it alone
      • Clutch
        • Probably an Amazon FX stage 2 flywheel+clutch+pressure plate
      • e36 318i driveshaft
      • 3.23 LSD from an 36
    • Steering
      • Z3 2.7 steering rack
    • Turbo
      • I keep going back and forth here, and again this is where I have the most to learn. I'm not sure if I should get one of the kits (CX racing, Hopwood, etc) or build it myself
      • Looking at either the G30-550 or 660 turbo, or potentially the GT3582. Definitely open to feedback here.
      • My goal is for this car to be as quiet as possibly, so very muted exhaust (without affecting performance) and potentially a recirculating blow off value or a turbo with a diverter valve built in? Not sure that exists for what I'm trying to accomplish

I'll upgrade the brakes, but eventually a bit further down the road i'll do the 5 lug conversion, throw some fatter wheels/tires on there and maybe some coilovers.

First up is the engine rebuild. I have all of the accessories off so I'm about to crack into the cylinder block to get to those piston rings....
