Don't forget the cost of a new clutch and exhaust system. I'm budgeting $4K for a RELIABLE 8PSI setup and will almost certainly exceed that. Leaning toward the Dederic (blueapplesoda on this forum) kit - put together by a guy who daily drives his turbo M20.
As far as turbo vs 24V swap, I've had an S50 and now an S52 in my cabrio, and it's OK, but not really a lot of power. I'm going to (maybe) turbo my M20 sedan and see if that has a bit more pep. Might also just drive the stock M20 into the ground for the next 10 years.

Please help a newb figure out what I would need. Obviously a good, reliable set up is what I have in mind. What all do I need to have the eta engine ready for a turbo? Thanks in advance.

Look in project car magizene. I think july of 08 has a whole article on building your own turbo set up for about 1500

you're better off going over to e30tech for turbo information....

Doing a DIY bulid and tuning without a wideband is exactly the same as removing your steering wheel and using vice grips instead. Works on paper but pegs the fail meter in reality.

Plus its an eta. It will always be somewhat slow. Just save till you can afford something that is worth it. It'll cost a lot more to fix.

If you're able to weld and tune yourself and don't buy ALL new parts, you can save a lot and still have a relatively reliable and powerful setup.
But yea no ems, ebay turbo, and a crap tune, it'll crap out a rod real quick.

I guess. But where do you think reliability comes from.
plus, yours doesn't run yet. Let us know in a year how it's working out. at least you have EMS and not a RRPFR. :p

I seem to be able to pull it off... I have like $300 tied up now. Most expensive part is manifold, the rest you piece together from CL, eBay, and local turbo-hopefuls that ran out of funds. And you don't necessarily need a wideband to tune MS, just as you may not get MS. Most people don't.

right but $1500 in parts doesn't leave you much for engine management. MS will cost about $500, plus you need a wideband. Then you have $800 for all your turbo parts. Not going to happen.

you don't know that... I thought it would be a pain in the ass, but then there are local guys, who turbo charge their everything and drive 60k miles worry free. It's all in tuning. Spend $1500 on parts and leave that last $500 on nothing but dyno-tune, and you have yourself a cheap and reliable turbo setup. There are way too many people who've done this, and there a lot more more turbo e30's than online community suggests.
When I was beginning my projects, I thought I'd be the first one in state, than there were like 20 guys already. I thought I'd be at least first in Greensboro, and there are 4 of them already. What I'm saying is, turbo m20 (especially E) is nothing new, and has been done way too many times to think that it's not reliable.
Besides, worst case scenario: he'll pick up another E block for $100 swap tturbo parts and roll on to see another 10k miles. Small price to pay.
