the thing that will help you the most is to first consider where you want your power, after that, learn to read compressor maps and find an appropriately sized turbo for your application. the squirrel performance calculator is great if you want to look at turbo size vs engine size/speed.

I was just curios as to what setups, mainly types of turbos, people are running and how they like them. ya know, how much boost, what size wastegate. etc...

just an overall solid driver that i take out on sunny days. Something with a strong power band that doesnt raapp out in first and second gear with a really strong pulling third gear. Top spead isnt that much of interest. Something around 150 tops would be nice. Im pretty sure i'll be running a 3.25 LS Diff

I recommend a gt3076 with a .82 turbine housing. Wicked turbo. On a stock s50b30us it was awesome. I am running it on my m20b25 now and its slightly oversized, but it still spools faster/better than any journal bearing snail I have tried. These are on street cars.

We just upgraded from this turbo on the s50 to a gt3582 cause we wanted to move to a t4 housing platform for moar flow and higher peak power.

this might be a retarted statement/question but the T3 and T4 and T3/T4 are all sizes of turbo mounting right? Like how big of a turbo you can mount to your manifold?

I think am kind of leaning toward a GT35r because i dont want to be under powered/limited with a small turbo, and it seems like people are having sucees with their builds with that turbo.

First of all have you ever driven an NA s52 e30? It's pretty fast already.

Of course I understand the power bug completely.

Are you planning on building the bottom end for reliability as well then? How much boost do you want? I was under the impression that a GT35r was a pretty serious turbo depending on the trim and that they can bend rods and what not.

No unfortunatly I have not driven an N/A e30 s52. But I have driven my brothers 97 m3 with a vortex V2 supercharger, headers, and m50 conversion and it's just not fast enough for me. And I know it's not the best comparison but I've always wanted an FI car.
But as for the turbo, I definitly need to do more research before I buy and that was the point of this thread. I've been recommended to go gt35 and others. But as of now I will not be rebuilding my bottom end. So if the gt35 is too much on stock internals i dont think that's the turbo for me.

Oh and as for boost I was planning on running a range of 8-12 psi

on stock compression thats plenty. go with the 35r you won't be disappointed.

At what point of boost do you think will start causing problems and damage? And I think putting some new studs would be a good thing to do when the engine pulled. Maybe some ARP studs? How hard is it to replace the cam with a pulled engine? If I'm there, I might as well to ensure a strong long lasting engine that is capable of more boost if wanted later down the road.
