so i've got an 85 eta that i am planning on parking and starting to work on. i got all the suspenion and interior just need drivetrain. i'm taking my time and buying a motor and slowly building it. this is my first time working with turbo's so i'm going to take my time and get the help i need and do it right. it will be a learning process. these are my choices of motors i can turbo. is their one that is easier to tune then the other? is their one that parts are cheaper or easier to get. i will be building my turbo from parts i can get on forums. not buying some kit. let me know what you think from your experience. thanks for all your comments.

well one of the most expensive parts can be the exhaust manifold. You can probably find a cheaper m20 manifold then an m50 for a e30. The ebay stainless log manifolds for the e36 are known for cracking. Plus a 524td manifold is easy to find, fit, and modify. There are a ton of maps available to start with. Also a motor build on an m20 is way cheaper then the other 2 motors. But if you want well over 400whp and money and technical ability are not an issue the m50 is the winner. Plus TRM tunes make it a synch if you don't have a local bmw savy tuner.

building your own turbo kit is the best way. Source quality parts to make the kit. Tuning will be relatively the same. It doesnt matter if youve got 4 cylinders or 6.
m42 is expensive to turbo right. ask me how i know
m20 is the cheapest and has the most parts avail for turbo applications
m50 is expensive but can make BIG power.

thats really all i'm looking for. its going to be a second car and for autox. no internals just head studs and it should be find for 300hp? i am so new at this but i have the time and am in no rush to get it done.Comment

300whp needs no internal mods. Id suggest the diyPNP unit. I can even sell you a brand new one assembled with a turbo base map loaded. I have a dealer account with diyautotune. But I guess the first step for you would be making a 2.7I motor. What's your goal for the car?
You've thrown in the M42. The I4 is gonna be lighter, you'll have a better handling car, but your power goals will have to be smaller for the $$. For me BMW is about I6 power.Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

Depends on how thrifty to are. It always cost more then it should on your first build. If you have some skills, access to a welder, don't mind used or knock off parts, and luck out you can probably make a good kit for $1500. Thats if you know exactly what your doing. But don't forget if your making that much power your going to need a performance clutch. Anything over say 8psi is going to toast your clutch. 8psi will do it to if you rape it hard in the third and fourth gear. On average i'd say most people average about $3k useing quality parts. But i'd suggest a kit from myself or DMS for that much and save yourself the headache.

it had to do with timing and patience. For example i bought a brand spankin new garrett TO4E for 150 shipped. TD manifolds are 100 or less. cx racing intercooler setups are cheap. get junkyard injectors,used begi, used tcd chip, and go to your local muffler shop for scrap tubing for the DP.
