    basic timing question

im running 17lb of boost, 36lb RCA injectors, vortec fml 12:1 ratio

my question is how do i figure out if im having a detonation problem, i retarded the timing once becore and could hear it loud and clear but it ran ok but idle'd like shit. so i reset the timing to stock and it still runs very good and the idle is alot better, but i can still here it detonating but its not as bad. so now im thing about advancing the timing by 1 tooth and seeing how it runs,

AM I ON THE RIGHT TRACK OR IS THERE A EASIER OR BETTER WAY TO DO THIS??????

P.S. OF COURSE I AM CHECHING TO MAKE SURE THE VALVES WONT HIT THE PISTON WHEN BEFORE I PUT EVERYTHING BACK TOGETHER..

Advance the timing during boost...? You sir, have disregarded every word of advise that has been said to you in your build thread.

cam or spark timing? cause you can't really adjust spark timing at all unless you program the DME, buy a ignition retard unit for boost (MSD?), or buy a chip with retarded spark timing. Cam timing is totally different.

You sound like you do not know what you are doing. Running a 12:1 vortech with 36lb injectors is too much fuel. You also need a new fuel pump (walbro 255lph) to use that 12:1 FMU. By that time, you will have invested enough money to have put it towards better engine management. e30tech is your friend, read, read, and read.

I have a nice begi fmu and turbo timing chip in a 380 ecu I will sell as I went megasquirt just recently and will not be needing these items ever again. They both work well for what they are, no detination all the way up to 18lbs or so on 30lb injectors. The stock ecu will not work with 36lb injectors. It will run on about 32lb at the most that I ever had luck with.

Cam timing won't help you here; leave it alone. You need to alter spark timing, which is best accomplished with a standalone, the cheapest of which is probably Megasquirt. If you already have a 255, you're set. No FPR changes are necessary.

Because I care, and you still haven't learned, from the past, to tell your future.
it may run for a month or 2, if you can keep your foot off the fun pedal. but make a few highway runs, and it will blow itself to bits.

i built a turbo setup on a toyota tercel i used to own (gimme a break, i was 17), and i ran supra injectors, a lc-1 wideband, and an apexi SAFCII to tune it. i had the afr tuned to 11.0 at wot, and the damn thing still blew up because i had no spark control. it ran for about a year, but it would still detonate badly after a long pull at 10psi.

bottom line, if you don't want to replace the motor VERY soon, i would get a ms setup, or do it right and get a full standalone unit.

I remember that thread and that post.
Your motor is detonating now and that is an engine killer. Imagine someone hitting the top of your pistons with a hammer, that's the best way to simulate what's happening to your motor now. I along with many other members on this forum say to stop messing around and give whodwho or blueapplesoda a pm and get a hold of their ready built ms2 boxes and throw your AFM, rrfpr all in the bin.
I work at an engine shop and it can get very ugly when stripping a motor that's completely shat itself from pre-detonation. A rebuild isn't cheap either especially when your opening up a can of worms.

well i actually have a afm that is calibrated for these injectors and it cam off a late 80's mustang turbo, both are made by Bosch and have the same plug, very lucky find, i got 36lb rca injectors and the afm with it all for a xbox 360 with 1 controller and 2 old games...lol good deal i think, but im going to shoot a video of my car so u guys can see how good it actually runs,
