starting my 1st m20 turbo build.

so last week i picked up my m20b25 engine. 180tho km's on it. not too bad given its age. its just over 100tho miles.

its obvious parts of it had been apart before. the front housing is siliconed, as is the water pump. but the w/p is new as is the cam belt. so i wasnt too worried.

so far ive stripped it down to have everything cleaned and the gaskets all replaced.

i performed a leak down test on it as the guy i bought it off failed to have a compression test done before it was removed.
    results were

cyl 1- 5 between 10-15%. thats good as i thought as ive see worse on way newer motors. but cyl 6 came back at 85% out the inlet. turns out it was just a bit of loose carbon sitting under the valve. thank god for that.

so now i have the head apart and dismantled im going to reseat the valves. and have it resurfaced and cleaned and vac tested.
is there anything else that you recomend i have done?
the head is a genuine bmw 885. so the ports are already much nicer then the amc ones. i dont think i need bother with port work. and im trying to keep it on a budget. the ports are really clean so its been a nice clean runner and the valves are clean to match.

the bores are mint. good hone marks still very obvious. no upper cylinder wall lip. everything looks in good condition. so my thoughts are that since the leak down was so good, the bores are so mint i thought to leave it alone and bolt it back together once the head comes back.

ill be using a mls head gasket and arp studs and bolting it all back together with all new genuine gaskets everywhere else.

ill post pics as soon as i can. anything anyone recomends?
like the best place to take water/ oil feed/ return lines from for the turbo?

    or just anything in general.

thanks, leigh. ill keep updating as parts arrive and i do more with it.

havent decided on boost yet or not but still, considering havin camshaft ground to 274 because either boost or no boost it will be nicer...gonna have to have mine redone though, seals are bad and might be a leaky head gasket as well, coolants vanishing with no visible leaks
may you rest in peace, or pieces, whichever comes first

im considering a vac turbo cam. but ill get the rest done 1st. that will be one of the last things id say. coolant loss and no leak sounds bad. doesnt it have trouble starting? and does it get hot very quickly? or has it ever been hot before? check the oil. make sure its not all milkshake like.

Since you've decided to go mls then make sure to have a good block/head surface

I'd do a mild valve job clean up the valve seats, back cut the valves and maybe get a pocket port job. Then obviously resurface the head. I'd still stick with an OEM head gasket with arp head studs. Going MLS requires you to have a nice finish on both block and head. Machining the head is easy but the block will need to be disassembled if you plan on decking it.

nah, not real serious, runs strong, but sometimes is hard to start and idles a bit off when cold but once warms shes great...doesnt run hot or anything...the coolant disappearance is pretty slow.....bit of fuel and oil does show on the plugs though....thinkin a good head job should do the trick, ill figure out after a leakdown test

far as cooling and oil lines go, I was considering tapping the hard cooling pipe behind the fan clutch and the oil filter housing...think that stuff would require some flow research though

the head is being resurfaced for sure. ill be reseating the valves also, which is nothing hard. ill be doing that myself.

the block will also get the resurface treatment.

pics or diagrams of oil and water feed and returns would be greatly appreciated. the oil drain back is a no brainer. as for the feed im torn between a "t" off where the oil pressure switch is, or another point tapped in. as for water im not all that sure at all. i want to keep extra piping/ hosing to minimum.

pics to be coming soon. as soon as i dont forget to take my camera to work lol.
                thanks, leigh

I'd run a t piece off the oil pressure sensor for the oil feed. For water lines I think you can use the tb coolent lines. Not that you need to run water lines to the turbo.

im trying to cover my bases. some turbos are water cooled. some not. im not 100% in which turbo ill be running yet.
