    Turbo Questions

Gonna drill my e34 pan for the turbo drain while its still off the car, what size should I drill it to? 5/8? and I don't have a welder so I was planning on something like this and tightening it and throwing locktite. Any suggestions?

do it right and have it tig welded. Weld the bung as high as you possibly can, this prevents the drain tube from being to far below the oil level line and thus causing drain issues. Also go as big as you can.

Lets talk in terms of metric -AN sizes which is what you should be using. To prevent backflow of oil I would recommend no less than -10 AN

well i mean you can tap the pan but the cast aluminum is prone to stripping. Its so much less headache to weld a bung in, especially if you are going to have to remove the hose from time to time which you have to do when fitting things/ building a turbo engine...

I'd recommend a -10an. Should be plenty for almost anyone's needs. And I agree with buttchug, makes things so much easier when it's welded on. It'll never leak, and wont back out, unlike a thread-on one would.

            Here's mine for preference (m20):

Just go to a local machine shop. 99% of them should have a TIG welder and the ability to do it.

Just drill a hole and use a 10an Bulkhead fitting so no welding is necessary. you will need 2x 10an bonded sealing washers and 2 10an locknuts. this is what I usually use in my turbo kits. I use the 90 degree bulkhead for clearance.

this with two lock nuts (or drill it and use a cotter pin) and two bonded washers.

AN fittings are actually standard, they came about from the US Military around WWII. Not trying to call you out, I just think that's a cool fact. The pipe sizes correlate to 1/16ths of an inch, i.e. -10 hose and fittings are for 5/8" ID hose.

But yeah, I agree. Definitely get it welded as high as possible, no matter what you do it will leak if its not welded. It's just a matter of time.
