    M42 boost options on budget?

I am thinking about putting a turbo or super-charger on my 1991 318I vert. I have a limited budget so I'm not sure if I can do it. What kind of a set up can I get for $1000 or under? And what sort of results could I expect?

    Thanks!

If you do get something for under $1000. Outcome will be pretty poor.

Thats what I was thinking. Any ideas for some extra hp that I could do in that budget? I already have a chip in it, and don't really want to do an engine swap.

I tried to keep mine under $1k, but couldnt make it happen due to some circumstances beyond my control. If you can get $1500 you can turbo your car. You're in Michigan and so is JakeB of classicdaily.net. PM him, he is making turbo kits for our cars.

^Thanks! I don't know if I will be able to spend that much, but that definitely sounds like a good way to go.

Think I could supercharge it for under $1000?

Are you able to do any fabrication work on your own? Welding? Anything you can build and not have to buy will save you money.

I can do some fab work, not great at welding. However, I have a friend who is a welding tech, so I can get it done for free.

If you can get him to make your manifold, downpipe and exhaust you might be closer to your budget. It's going to be tight.

I have a buddy that has a small supercharger, he might sell for 150-250$. It didnt work for his m20 but it would work well for a m42, Ill ask him. Its a eaton m45 I think. He has made a flange for it, not sure it would work for a m42

Do you have any experience with supercharging them? From what I'm finding, that looks like a cheaper option.

I think I have a pretty good feel for it, but what other parts would I need along with a supercharger running 7-10psi? Other than mounting bracket and Custom Intake.

Injectors, a means of tuning, all the misc parts like vacuum lines, any maintenance parts such as sparks plugs appropriate for boost. If I was to supercharge or turbo an m42 I would spend no less than 1500$ to make sure I dont get stranded somewhere. Meagsquirt is necessary for a reliable build and it alone costs around 700$.

What if I only ran like 5psi? From what I've seen it can do that without a tuning.
Or run 7-10psi and use something like a Miller W.A.R. chip?
