Any one familiar with Volvo turbos?

Local guy has collected too many lawn ornaments and his mom (yes, his mom) is kicking his ass. He has to get rid of his crap and is having a "fire sale".

I can get my hands on his Turbo volvos, I just don't know anything about them.
Are they any good, what would I need to grab from them if I were to do so...
    Here is what he's got:

Late 80's early 90's Volvo 740 parts. Email me what you need and I wil see if I have one. Currently wrecking 4 Volvos. All turbo cars. $1 and up.

1984 Volvo 760 turbo. Auto. Engine is B23T, knocks bad. rest of car average shape. Have papers. Would be great winter car if you repair/replace the engine. Blue fenders and 1/4s, white everywhere else. (was told it was police car in New west back in the 80's) $350 obo

1987 Volvo 740 Turbo Sedan stick shift with turbo plus kit. Red on Black. lowered one inch all around. Aircared. On road now, has not been sitting around. Things I replaced this year... TPS, T-body service, breather box, front engine seals, timing belt, aux belts, muffler hangers, and all its services. Great winter car. High kms but you wouldn't know by driving it. $1900 obo.

So I'm reading my post and it sounds like I want a Volvo.
I think you guys clued in anyways, I just want the Turbos... If I buy the whole Volvo, it's for the Turbo, so I can stick it into my iX....
Anyone used one? Are they reliable?

My friend used to have both a sedan and wagon, both 740 turbos in 5spd...it's actually a 4spd with a little button for the o/d 5th gear on the shift knob, kind of wierd at first but you get used to it quickly.

Both of the cars were kind of beaters, but that's b/c they didnt have the best maint. before he got them. Nonetheless, I drove them plenty of times and once you hit boost, you hit boost and it's definitely kind of fun. Check out turbobricks.com, that was my friend's forum of choice and he was always showing me crazily done up Volvos on that forum.

Supposedly the motors are real stout and if you've ever seen one, you know that space in the engine bay is plentiful and it looks decently easy to work on.

I would check the forum out, maybe they have an FAQ regarding buying Volvos that will tell you what to look for. If it checked out, I would definitely buy it, a RWD stock turboed 5spd is definitely appealing.

The turbos are usually really small. In most cases its a garret T25 which is pretty useless for the most part. I definitely wouldn't pick up a volvo just for the turbo. I think the only useful part of the turbo system in general might be the intercooler if its the huge one. Hope this helps.

I thought he was talking more about getting the car mod and drive.

My mistake. I would just get the car for the rwd turbo 5spd fun factor.

If my memory serves me correctly the 7 series turbos are indeed rather small. What you want is to find a 240 Turbo and snag the gigantic garret out of it. I actually have one of these cars but I can't bring myself to tear it down just for the snail...

i think those turbos are probably a bit small for what you want to put on your ix. i mean you want t3/t4 or holset hx35 if you are talking stock bottom end. i'd take this question to e30tech, its all turbo guys.

I was thinking about the same thing....

I just picked up a wrecked 96 850 R. It has an engine with 2.4 liters displacement, runs at about 11 psi and puts out about 240 hp. With alcohol injection the volvo guys can up the boost and get about 325 hp. My thought is, why can't I put the whole turbo setup on an M20? Hell, maybe I can even use their ECU?

The 850 is a 5 cyl so unless you can figure out how to get it to fire 6 injectors instead of 5 their ecu is worthless on an m20. However i have heard of vw guys running the older 4cyl volvo turbo systems on their 16v's.

Actually, both those cars have Garrett T3 turbos. No 7 series Volvos used T25s. The 84-87's had T3's. For 88 and 89 they switched to the Mitsubishi-made TD-05 12b, with some of the late 89's getting TD04 13c's. All 740/940's from 90 on had Mitsu TD04 13c's, which are indeed tiny.

The 12b is only a little smaller than the T3, but spools alot quicker. I should know, I have one on my beater 89 740 Turbo Wagon. I'm considering switching to the T3 sometime soon for some more fun...

Anyway, none of these turbos are really worth the trouble to put on an E30. The T3 would make the most sense, but it's not going to take you too far, esp. on an M20...
