First off, I'll throw out the obligatory statement that you can install whatever engine you want in the car with enough fabrication.

As far as I know the blocks have different bosses for the engine mounts, so you're gonna need something custom. For the head you're going to want one that matches the pistons you're using. Which head is best is a toss up. I've seen various threads comparing the flow rates of one to the chamber shape of another. It's something you can decide for yourself on which is best. The 2002 guys do 5 speed swaps all the time, so getting a tranny to mate won't be a problem.

Looks like you've still got a lot of searching to do.

lol your not kidding i wonder if just building the 1.8 would be easier i know someone who got a 2.0 block i should talk to him.

I have a 2002 block in my 318. Issues to overcome, passenger side motor mount. Easy to overcome if you can fabricate. Other than that, everything else bolts up. I'm still in the works with my swap, but so far I have everything 318i minus the block (which is 2002 with piano pistons)

How does it perform? Or is it all under the knife for the turbo project?

The early 318s came with m10s. So yes, with OEM parts too.

hey, hey you i thought about pming you but i figured you would post something sooner or latter. and ya i was wondering that to what your porjected hp with that set up will be. and should i stay with fuel injection or should i do a double carb kit and keep the 2002 top end as well. i was thinking about doing the pistions ( not sure whitch ones) with a scheric 292 cam and a few other things.

I'm gonna hope for 250-300whp. I'm still a long ways off from running a boosted engine. It's in the works, just had a hiccup. Everything bolts up the same (minus the passenger side mount as I have said). If you want carbs to adjust/tune depending on elevation, want poor cold start driveability, go for it. You will have higher output from a carb'd m10 (as you can re-jet for more aggressive cams) but I prefer fuel injection. Just remember 2002's camshaft/distributor are different than the 318i. If you are looking for that much power from an m10 without boost, don't expect it to be a pleasant daily driver. That power will almost ALL be up top in the power band, and your lower RPM power/torque will suffer

Forgot to mention another difference between 318i blocks and 2002 blocks, the 2002 block does not have bolt holes to mount the flywheel cover/guard thing that the 318's come with. You can still use the guard, but it won't bolt to the block unless you do some drilling (which I chose not to do). It is being held on with 4 bolts to the transmission. The 2002 crank gear is a double chain setup. What you can do is use a single row chain on it with the 318i head. (works just fine). On another note, my hodgepodge setup roared to life today for the first time. Can't wait to actually drive it in the next few days

Congrats man! I'm doing the same as you for the cover plate. I've got an e21 block and just have that plate bolted to the tranny. I've been meaning to try and find out what e21's have there. I'm curious if it could possibly cause some problems later down the road when I turbo the 318 since it has less bracing from engine to trans.

You can definitely run an '02 M10 in your M10 but only if you plan on running an aftermarket ignition system.
The distributor turns in the opposite direction than the later M10's so you can't run your same ignition.
