distributor Vacuum Advance

ok, on almost all race cars we have ever had in the past. You throw away the vac advance and play with the weights inside the distributor.
This being our first BMW build I am intrested to know what most have done with the vac advance,
do you leave it open? wire it directly to the manifold? remove the whole assembly? what has everyone found with there cars?

From what ive read you just hook up the VAC on the dizzy right to the manifold and bypass the electronic part.

Does the electronic thing even do anything ? I think mine is open 24/7

but whats its reason for existing. Is it supposed to disable the advance til the engine reaches temp and its failure mode is closed (bad) or open (meaningless when warm) ?
