I believe the heads are the same? Unless its from a 2002 which would have a backwards spinning Dizzy. Plus you need to switch over the double sprocket for timing on the head for a single which the bottom end will run.
Anybody know if the head can be swapped onto the block?
And if so what would need to be done?

Of course everything depends on whether or not combustion chambers on the head go togerteher with the piston domes. That being said, any head can be used with flat top pistons (although your CR will be too low for NA no matter what.)
There were many different heads on different 2,0 engines. If you can, get a 1,8i head with big valves, that goes best with 1,8i pistons. If thats what you have. You'll gain nothing over that by using 2,0 head.
I believe any piston can be made to fit any head by grinding one or both (combustion chambe and/or piston dome). Another question is will it be any good.

Camshafts, distributors and sprockets can be changed. And should be, from time to time :)
Buying a set of timing gear parts shouldn't be out of the budget if one is building an engine.
my 2 cents
The 2.0 head (should say E21 on it, right?) has a different combustion chamber shape
than the 1.8i head, and comes from the earlier 320 and later 2002.
I THINK that the 1.8i dome misses hitting metal on it- it's a very open chamber.
Your compression ratio will be around stock, since the dome more or less balances
out the change in displacement.
But it has the 2002- direction cam gear, so you'll need your cam.
If you have an E12 or 121(t)(ti)(tii) head, that will possibly have dome interference
problems. It's easy to check- put clay on a dome, then drop the head into place
(with all the valves closed, cam out) and see what it looks like. If it doesn't sit flat.
the clay will show you where it's hitting. you can then decide if you want to
grind on it or choose a different head.
Everything has been made to work with grinding (except putting 1.8 pistons onto a 2.0
crank- that don't work no way nohow)
and none of it's a total fail; almost none of it made more power, though, except
by accident!
