    Ignition Timing Trouble

A little bit of an intro to my dilemma:

Not long ago I finally installed helicoils and fixed the plug ports + cylinder compression. The m10 still didnt want to rev past 3000k. Then I figured that I had to mess with ignition timing.

So while a lot of m10 data is available, they seem to vary in the 2002s, 84 318s and 85 318s in dizzy direction of rotation and rev speeds for seeing the marks on the flywheel.

I have concluded that on my 85 318 m10, the motor spins clockwise while dizzy spins counter clockwise. All of my wires are connected correctly on the dizzy cap in the correct firing order 1342. When the motor is at TDC, the rotor arm is at the plug 1, another 360 and its at plug 4.

I tried to time it by ear and was able to get to 4000 rpms but then motor begins to ping so I back off a little and it never gets to 6.5k. The sticker in the engine bay says for ignition timing, set rpms to 4000 +-50 and adjust to 26 degrees BTDC.

When I rev it to 4K and then try to play with the dizzy, im still unable to see the marks on the flywheel.

What do I go from here? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

PS. I also have the ICV delete, I disconnect the vac advance, and I adjusted the valves to .008".

Are you using a timing light?

Is the distributor in good working order? loose bushings, stuck weights, etc. can cause havok.

Could it be that timing chain stretched? Im at 286k and have no idea if the chain has ever been serviced

I found in my dizzy, make sure the reluctor ring is above the pick up points (under the rotor) if it is worn and there is a lot of vertical play in the shaft, you need to dissasemble and shim it (I used just stock washers) to where it is tight again.
DO NOT put the washers under the drive gear, you need to raise the flat part of the ring above the pick ups to give a good clean crisp signal.

Thank you, I will look into that today. I also found that unplugging the fpr didnt do anything so ordered a new bosch fpr, injectors, and tps. We shall see how these make an improvement

                Update:

So I have installed a bosch FPS and injectors. It def runs much better now and im easily able to rev to 4k rpms. The exhaust manifold also doesnt get red hot anymore.

The problem not being able to rev much higher than 4k rpms remains and it points me to the dizzy. I have read that after 4k rpms, the timing is no longer read off a sensor but rather off the dizzy itself so if its flawed like some of you guys have suggested, then that would be the reason.

I also replaced the timing chain tensioner but realized that i did it all wrong. First, when i opened up the plug and took out the spring, I found no ball in there. Reading forums later I realized that if someone has opened the tensioner up in the past, they have probably lost it. Also, I didnt bleed it as i now know I was supposed to so the chain has some slack on it. Could this be the reason I cant see the timing marks?

I've owned my M10 for 16 years and it has headers, ansa sport, K&N and an 8lb flywheel. the one thing that gave me top end revs was reducing the valve clearances to .008. Made a world of difference.
