120mph? Thats sounds like quite a bit in 4th. Ive taken my M10 to 128 and a ridin in a friends at 135, given a nice smooth stretch and no head wind.

Damn, I couldn't get my 318 to 120 until I started going downhill.

I calculated the gearing speeds using this:

and used the ratios for a getrag 245 transmission, worked out to (at 6000rpm):

              1st: 30
              2nd: 56
              3rd: 84
              4th: 111
              5th: 137

I think its a combination of BMW speedos being famously optimistic, slightly shorter tires, and a nice tailwind...

              love your car btw!

Cool, thank you! I was going to ask my bro to go side by side with me as hes got a digital tach in his car to see just how off the e30 speedo is lol.

                    I drive a stock M10 and manage 120mph in fourth with a 3.64 diff!
I even posted this photo here more than once... :)
Its a four speed manual.4 and 5 speed were the same ratio wise.
I just dont have the overdrive fifth gear.4th is 1:1 in both!

So the lil terd does better with a taller gear? Mine had a 3.91 and would only do 110. no matter what!

Forth gear's ratio is 1:1 and with a 3.64 this
                        equals to 120mph@7200rpm! :D
                        Now,with the 3.91 diff,top speed is 9mph less.:x
I wish I had fifth gear all the time though...

I managed to get my 85 318 to 118mph down hill with a 3.91. I was running a mikuni 44PHH at the time. The sound was amazing. Those days are long gone now.

I did a 3.73 in the M10 last winter. It worked fine, hardly noticed since they came with 3.91's as is. But i wouldnt go any lower, may work but any diff lower than a 3.73 is pricey until you find 2.93's and thats just way too low
