JE Wristpin wall thickness for boost

    Hi,

I purchased a set of custom JE pistons for my 2.8 m20 The engine is turbocharged and I am anticipating to push 23-26 psi through it once built. Topend supplied .150 pins and i opted for 9310 nickel carbon steel alloy. Straight.

When I received them the wall thickness to me seemed thin. I checked with JE and I was advised to run .180 thickness in the 93 series. I went back to Topend and Steve has advised .150 is all I would ever need.

So not entirely sure who is right here and was hoping for some feedback. My gut feeling says to use .180. The weight factor starts becoming the issue i guess.

    Rods are 135mm h beams.

JE are the ones who would know. Having said that research suggests that 0.150" would be ok with high end materials though.

The toughest piston in the world is useless if the wrist pin gives up the ghost. Here is a breakdown of what the wrist pin does, why they fail, and when to upgrade them to improve the strength of your engine combination.

It has been said that the piston and connecting rod are the most tortured parts in a performance engine. Few engine builders dispute that notion, but what about the less glamorous piece of steel that mates them together through thick and thin? In a sense, the wrist pin is like the unsung soldier who throws

Thanks mate, yeh the data out there is a bit all over the place and not a lot of info in terms of ratings, otherwise could draw a line in the middle and make a concencous . Il go with JEs recommendation as you said.

Big risk to get it wrong

yeah the type of piston (full round or slipper skirt) affects things as length is different then there is the diameter and obviously those numbers are based on 8 cylinders

        0.180 is the safer option
