    Future summer project

    hello I know I dont post often here but this summer I want to step up my e30 game and thought this would be a good place to get help/pointers

    so this is how it started we (me and my step dad) replaced the steering rack and noticed that the front crankshaft seal was leaking then I thought I would get a water pump super kit from pelican parts then that got me thinking it would be easier do a head rebuild while its all torn apart using much better rocker arms and a high degree cam like 304 but, im still unsure how you clear the stock m20 pistons with that cam, I am also planning on upgrading the pistons too so its pretty much a m20 overhaul

    I was shopping for parts today at school and I think I can do it for ~ 2,500 give or take a few hundred dollars

    I would really like to hear some thought or suggestion im open to anything

    are you stuck on using the M20? If not...a motor swap could be accomplished at that price. (m50 etc...)

      304 might be a bit much, and you'd have to really bump up the CR and upgrade a lot of other things to make it worth it. You'll probably want a 288 with at least 10:1 cr.

      m50 swap = yawn ;)

        too easy 8) + I want to have new parts on the car so, no swap im keeping the m20

        ya well ever thing in the head will be new with new pistons then the rest would be machined back to perfection that was the original plan but now looking at it im not sure about the cam

        what is the highest degree cam I could run that will clear stock M20 pistons?

            well the 304 has like 12mm of lift.. which is a lot more than stock. a 284/272 is a better match for stock pistons. Even with that, you have to be careful if you have to deck the block or shave the head. Check clearances carefully at TDC, makes sure you have 2mm minimum. you can always cut the valve pockets a little deeper.

                i think im going to go with a 288 i dont think ill run into problem with that one

                i mainly want to do a head rebuild witch is about 1,000$ adding a stroker kit will put me way out of budget but ill defiantly keep it in mind

                  You will still need to be very careful with valve clearances. and realistically you need a compression bump to 10:1 to really use that cam.

                      where could I find 10:1 cr pistons the only place I found was at Ireland engineering
