    the minimalist m20 bottom refresh

I have oil going into my chamber and burning. A lot of it like foul the plugs closed in 50 miles a lot. I am also so broke as a joke. This is the list of things I think that I have to have, opinions welcome as to add or drop from the list. I just redid the head in Jan. do to a broking belt and rockers so that end is good.

    1. Lower gasket kit *edit w/ headgasket
    2. Just a Timing belt not a kit
    3. Piston rings
    4. Con rod bolts (stretch type ?)

Sounds like your pistons rings are gone or maybe it could be the head gasket but I doubt it in view of the recent work you just had done. You are close to Philly so I would get on Craigslists and see if I could get a good motor and just replace your entire motor. I have seen m20s super cheap on the Craigslist in Dallas. I remember seeing one for 200 a while back. I would replace the timing belt and adjust the valves and slap it in.

Did you put your rebuilt head on a high mileage motor?

the motor mileage was 147000 so its not that high for an m20 the PO was a bit of idiot so.. i also have a 210xxx mi motor from a donor car all ready

I wouldnt really trust a other engine if i just threw it in there. Its just not the same as me double checking everything myself you know

You need to do a leakdown or compression test before you conclude the bottom end is bad. Something else (blocked vent system, etc.) could be causing your problem.

The con rod bearing set is cheap, do those while you are at it. The con rod bolts are supposed to be replaced, but I doubt they are really torque to yield, so resusing them is possible, but it is something you have to make the call on. (torque to yield, as I understand it, is stretching the bolt to the point where it will not return to its original length. This torque will give the maximum hold, but is rarely actually used)

So how do you plan on getting the pistons out to put the rings on without a new head gasket?

I heard that about the con rod bolts too. I'm having a hard time making that call. Has anyone reused them and how did it work out for you?
