Valve doesn't return to closed position

I drove 4 25 minute track sessions. The car was running great. At the end of the 4th session, someone wrecked (gt3 into the wall) so I drove the car off the track and parked it. About 45 minutes later, I started up the car. It barely started and sounded like I broken rocker arm. I took off the valve cover and found about 1/4" of play between the cam (off lobe) and the rocker for the intake valve on cylinder #1. The rocker, eccentric, rocker pad, etc.... look fine. It seems as though the valve is not returning to the closed position. Anyone else have this problem? Any idea what happened?

    Thanks!

    Maybe a bent valve?

e30s are like fat girls that USED to be hot, you just gotta work them out to make them hot again.

Broken valvespring(s)--not likely that both broke--or stuck in the guide from either deposits or bent. My $ is on bent: trackdays present an environment quite conducive to an overly-enthusiastic (though accidental) probing of the top of the tach. Didn't make any noise before pitting? Sounds like it's time to pull the head...

I'm pretty sure I didn't over rev it (I shift at 6k). Although maybe the valve floated a bit... the valve spring does have 242k on it. It definitely did not make any noise before I started it back up. Maybe the valve seat ring came loose?

that's pretty wierd. have you tried compressing the spring to see if the valve moves at all in either direction?

regardless of what happened, it definitely has a bent valve now. :(

Yeah, the spring compresses and rebounds to its stuck position. Good point... it is weird though.
