Cold Air Intakes... Yes or No

What do you dudes think about cold air intakes on an M20?

    Any real gains?

    Advantages? Disadvantages?

Found a nice cold air intake & heat shield kit
from SIGNATURE MOTORING for like $164 shipped.

    Idk?.....

    Thanks

On the stock M20, a cold air intake will only make a different sound than the stock airbox. It can even reduce your HP slightly, if it is not properly blocked off, and getting cool air.

In the end, it is not worth the money.

you cant call it a cold air intake if your getting warmer air. Cold air WILL help, not hurt your performance. If you just have a cone filter it is not considered a cold air intake its considered a cone filter.

it makes a pretty significant difference in a fully built M20.. on a stock one, it will be smaller, and sound better.

no shield will make less power, obviously. But what most people consider a cold air intake around here is just an open filter sucking hot air from the radiator. :p

If you want sound, just cut up the lower airbox

            sounds good, cost = 0, gain = 0

Total waste of money if you dont do anything else. The stock box is the best set up for stock. If you make modification, maybe...

if you try to to remove the baffle in side the stock airbox, you actually will lose torque and drivability. I think the AFM is the culprit.

BMW made it about as good as it gets. If you wanted any real gain then something like a Gruppe M intake on a built M20, but that's about it. Gruppe M is very expensive as well.

I might test some different intakes on my MM motor to see how much of a difference can actually be made. Might try out Kamotors version. I'm just uneasy about the amount of air I will able to drag in through the inclosed filter.

Sounds good, but if you dont direct cold air then you will lose power. You do gain responce from an open air filter. Best bet is to rig up a Cold Air Ram, Just gotta worry about rainy days, But if you live in so cal like me you dont need to worry. Over all, depends what you want and if you want to spend money or just make your own set up.

ps, i have a cone filter right at the air flow meter. No power gain at all just better rev responce and sounds alot better and somewhat agressive for a m10

the factory box is already a cold ram air. the design is already cold air from front of the car.

it does to a certain extend but most of it's blocked by the headlight and radiator.

it's a good design, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved on.

I gained 10whp. But I don't have an AFM either.

I've got a cone filter somewhere I can sell you.
Nothing wrong with it, I just got tired of switching between it and the stock box (with a drop in K&N) for smog in Cali.
