Well, they do flex so you need enough room (clearance) to use one. They flex more as rpm increases, and if I recall correctly, they will flex about 1.5 to 2.0". Sometimes you need a spacer to keep from hitting the hoses near the block, or to get close enough to the radiator to work properly. If you're too close it's new radiator time. Sometimes they will develop stress cracks at the rivet area, and different blade offsets are available, some experimentation would be required. You would be as well off just to get an original style replacement fan if yours is shot.

flex fans are illegal in many clubs because they have a propensity to cut hoses and spill slippery coolant all over the place.

if your stock fan cut the rad hose it's your engine mounts that are broken, not the fan.

I had bad motormounts and the powersteering pullie cut one of my raidiator hoses.
Also one of the hoses that runs by the distributor has to be zip tied back. all e30s I've seen then tied back.

it doesn't have to be zip tied, there's a clip that yours is missing. it holds the hose to the anchor hook on the front of the motor used to lift it with an engine hoist. also has a clip for the impulse sensor wire.
