Pretty cool that my car was actually running up until the time that I took it apart, eh?

And just for kicks, here's a funny story...

The mechanic that I mentioned in my first post insisted that the metallic tapping coming from near my crankshaft had nothing to do with my misfire. According to him it had to be my plugs and wires (which it wasn't). When that didn't work he wanted to replace the afm. I took the car away from him, but I wonder how many guesses it would've taken him to find the problem.

there's a reason I don't trust 99% of mechanics. Especially these days - basically, if they can't plug it into a diagnostics machine to tell them what's wrong, they don't have a fucking clue.

Wow. I would have never thought that could happen. Good find btw. Not everybody would have noticed that (well, until they took it apart).

Yeah, the only thing that big nut on the end of the crank holds in place is the timing belt pully. Why it has to be torqued to 300ftlbs, I'm not sure.

well the timing wheel/damper bolt to that hub too, and they're pretty substantial to the operation of the engine.

Wow, definitely keep us posted on if it solves the problem, I'm having very similar issues that I'm still trying to solve.

So I just got another harmonic balancer in the mail. Here is what it should look like:

                        and the back:

I'll be installing it tonight. Have to drive 200 miles tomorrow...

I am slightly worried that the dimples on the front ot the gear-like ring are different than on my original piece. I am going to assume for now that they were put there simply to balance the thing after it was made. Hopefully it works.

Put the thing in last night and drove the car home. Just drove it 30 miles to work, no misfires. I guess I win. Check engine light is on though...:hitler:
