Adjustable ignition timing bracket for M20 325i

I am thinking of making a new adjustable bracket for the sensor that picks up the engine speed - timing at the front sprocket of my 87 325i engine.

Is there any reason why this will not work?

    this is a bad idea

the VR sensor is very sensitive. if you don't get the placement just right you will have misfires and cutouts.

also, it will affect more than ignition timing. the ECU uses the crank sensor for fuel timing as well, so if you change the timing at the crank, you'll affect both fuel and spark.

and you will end up advancing or retarding the entire map. You can't really tune this way - the engine might need more timing in one part of the map, and less in another, for optimum power. You'll also be dicking with your idle timing and cruise map.

the solution is to get a real tune...
