    Cleaning Painting Baking Valve Cover.

Still cleaning up the engine before the swap. I just got done painting my manifold and baking it, but when I removed the valve cover... WOW that thing is dirty.

Any ideas on how I can clean it? Is it safe to use engine brite and rinse? Don't want water to cause any problems. How in the world am I going to clean underneath the metal plate on the underside of the valve cover, I'm sure theres plenty of crud built up under there.

I have got to get it clean before I cure the paint in the over or else it will cause a smoky mess.

    Any help would be appreciated.

don't let your wife/girlfriend/mom catch you - but do a quick degrease job on it, and stick that thing in the dishwaser with some of those electrosol tablets. run it on the pots and pans/hot setting. It will come out clean as a whistle.

The heat from running your engine will cure it.

I just thought that the paint would adhere better if it had been oven cured. Wait Nando are you serious? Dishwasher? I don't have to worry about being caught if I'm curing my manifold in the oven, that was stinky and smoky.

I will put it in the dishwasher if that really works, I live in an apartment so I'm not really worried about hurting the unit.

don't laugh. and don't tell my wife, but it came out looking brand new. I cycled the washer after with nothing in it to be sure no residue was left. It's not really much different than greasy pans.

Well it would have been different than pans if I had put mine in there straight off the car. I soaked it in engine brite for a while and when I tipped it a fountain of sludge poured out. Put it through 3 engnie brite cycles. I was worried about the dishwasher.

I just went ahead and baked it at 300 with a little residue still in there, I'm pretty sure it will start smoking like crazy in a few minutes.

Oh this is random but if you run the dishwasher with nothing in it except lemonade kool aid in the wash compartment it will clean your dishwasher. 11 cent cleaner as opposed to 5 dollar stuff they sell at the store.

yeah I did degrease and scrub it a bit first, I wouldn't put it in there straight off the car. But it went in semi-clean and came out looking new.

put it in a tank or bucket with purple power mixed 50/50 leave it for a day and rinse, it'll be as good as new. May have to do it couple times if its really dirty.

the biggest problem I find , is that cleaning it will break up alot of the caked on residue in the pvc hose hole and the plate behind the backing. If you are going to clean it, I would advice cleaning it throughly. or jsut clean the surface.
