    Clarifications on head rebuild/improvements

Short backstory: Lost compression in cylinders 2 and 5, Have ETA block sitting around, Building "low compression budget stroker" (boosted), rocker arms are brand new, Thinking about getting coolant channels welded, Getting head checked and resurfaced before it goes back on.

I have been reading a lot about DIY port and polishing and recently have been practicing on a junk eta head. I started with the the exhaust manifold, gasket matched it and feathered it in. Now when I look at the I head(885) I notice that there really is no need to gasket match because the gasket is slightly smaller than the I head and manifold. My question is, is it recommended to port the exhaust side only if I were to run boost via supercharger? Would the uneven porting be harmful or at least barely beneficial?

    Thanks guys!:D

i'm wondering about more information on doing this too. I actually found your thread cause i was searching for things about what i can do to my eta head. I'm about to get a 325i cam, dual valve springs, and a full motronic 1.3 swap. I just want to know what works and what doesn't. I know that the intake and exhaust ports on the ETA head are really small when compared to an 885 head. I can get the 885 head as well, although I've heard that this doesn't really run very well.

Like i said, i basically want to know what the op wants to know.

unless youre a real pro, i wouldnt bother "porting" the 885 head. it already flows good enough for what youre gonna throw at it, im sure. maybe knock off some rough spots. like you seem to have found out already, the manifolds would continue to be a restriction. this is my opinion and there are others here who know more.

you need a 731 head from a 323i. search if you dont know what this is. porting the eta head is never gonna be "good enough". valves are smaller as well. you just cant make it an 885 head. i think i would probably throw an 885 head on there before doing all that BS to an eta head, even with the low compression that results. again this is just my opinion, there are others on here who will disagree, and others that know more than i.
