    Change hex headbolts?

    I have a 87 325ic with 156,000 on what I think are the original hex headbolts, should I change them to the torx type?

    My concern is that I don't want to have to change the head gasket. I have read that you can change them one at a time, but I am concerned that the gasket will start to leak.

    My mechanic said that I should leave them because if they were going to fail they would of already, since I have 156,000 miles on them.


    What do you think I should do??

    if it ain't broke, don't fix it..

      At 156k, I'd seriously consider pulling the head and having the valves ground, new seals, and possibly new guides. The short block is probably in very good condition at this point, but there is probably enough wear in the head to justify a head refresh. When re-installing the head you'll use the torx bolts.
      The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

        My mechanic replaced all the rockers, parts associated with the rockers, and cam with the head on.
        I am new is this stuff, and in hindsight I should have taken the head off and had it rebuilt.
