People talking about oil always seems to be retarded, but here's my two cents.

Mobil 1 is a 'cracked' conventional oil, that due to a lawsuit, is allowed to be sold as synthetic because it has been modified. It is not synthetic in the sense that the base is conventional dino oil. I used to sell Amsoil, and that stuff seemed like it really was engineered to be better. Change the oil half as often and the cost difference won't matter.

I run 5w30 3 out of 12 months a year, because in winter my usual 20w50 will put too much wear on the engine during a cold start.
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
      Mark: "You never will."

Seemed like a good idea. I mean, when I pour that 20w50 out on a cold morning, it hardly even moves. It's like molasses! That's probably how it's circulating through the engine.

Anyway - do you run 20w50 the whole year? What do you use during the winter months?

I just wanna know so I can be a copycat.

I've been running 15w40 all year, I just switched to 20w50 and intend to use it year-round.

Just because it pours slow doesn't mean that it moves that slow in the engine. The pump exerts a force greater than that of gravity.

                oil is oil is oil

Run 20w50 its what is recommended by BMW the only difference between the manufactures is how the oil is packaged, meaning that Royal Purple may have different components that clean your engine better or worse then another brand.

BTW Royal Purple 20w50 is a good and is what I use in my car

If you actually read and do your hw, royal purple is a great oil. For racing.

Same with Motul, and the rest of your race oil. They are designed to keep a film even under thousands of lbs of pressure.

Problem is that race oil has no detergents that normal street oil contains, so the insides of your motor gum up super fast in non-race conditions.

Stick with your Mobil1's or whatever off the shelf wal-mart oils you use. Leave the race oils for racing.

Personally, I use M1 15w50 synth. There seems to be a shortage of that right now, so I'll use m1 10w40 synth if I have to.

except it isn't. Put a modern, light weight, ultra-low ZDDP content oil in your M20 and see how long the cam lasts.

BMW's 20w50 reccomendation was also based on the oils available in the 1980s.. that was 30 years ago!
