The DME's are otherwise equivalent. Well, I have seen 153 DMEs make more power than a 173 as tested on a dyno.
the differences are more physical than anything. the single board design of 173 and later ecus is just more reliable. 153s are pretty complicated inside, since they use twice as many components to do the same job.

I had to reset the computer once again on Saturday evening. Looks like it takes about 3-5 run cycles for it to "induce vomiting."

Am predicting another reset tonight on my way home, and if I do, a 173 is on the way.

Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
      Mark: "You never will."

Okay, I'm going to jinx myself but...

...I put in the new 173 DME and so far no problems. With the old 153 it would be around 3-5 start-run-stop cycles before it would act up. However, I haven't had any yet and I've been be-boppin' and scattin' all over some run cycles.
