    Typical 327i question

i have a plain old ETA in my car. 160k on it.

im gonna take everything headgasket and up out of it. replacing it with all "I" parts. from an auto 140k on it, all new gaskets.
harness, 173 ecu, all the goodies.

    i dont have SETA pistons.

is it gonna fire right up with stock computer, and plain eta pistons? i understand theres lower compression, and i dont intend on going with standalone quite yet, as i cant afford it.. also keeping my 2.93LSD in it, if possible, at the moment as well. just wondering if this can be done.

the only differences between the ETA and SETA engine for the 2.7i stroker are:

the SETA 88+ uses the Motronic 1.3 with toothed gear on the front which makes it much easier to swap the 173
the pistons run higher compression in the SETA

the car will still run fine, but you wont gain the same kind of NA horsepower out of an ETA based 2.7i than you would from a SETA based 2.7i.

that being said, I think the ETA stroker is the best boost candidate.

some 87 model year cars also have this. As my ETA has it. I am also about to do this same build. My car is already Motronic 1.1, so the swap should be pretty straight forward.

        87 etas are motronic 1.0, not 1.1

        and seta's are 1.1, not 1.3.

right.. not the answers i was looking for mainly.. got alot of the same info from much of the threads out there i just never understood if it could work reliably. without the need for boost, and aftermarket programming.

it will start and run fine on motronic 1.3. you'll end up with similar power to a 325i, and the low end torque of an eta. It's not going to be a top end performer, though.

              sample dyno charts:

              stock for stock 885

not quite stock - forged pistons, etc.

righteous. thanks for the info. how about rear end gearing? is everything going to be fine on that end with the 2.93??.. or would there be something more worth it further down the road. also im wondering about clutches. right now i have a dual mass, im pretty sure. while its all out, would it be practical to change to a different setup? possibly reccomended "HD" clutch system that isnt too expensive.aggressive? not looking for 400HP capability but i know this clutch has had better days, and adding the slight power from the I system might cut it shorter than i hope. thoughts....

I would go with a 3.73 rear end. Acceleration should be better compared to the 2.93 and you should still get decent highway gas mileage.

Switching from a dual mass flywheel to a single mass will make it rev quicker too.

I swapped everything over to "i" spec. It fired right up the first time. No worries. Just double-check all harness grounds & connections.

As far as clutches go, I am running a SPEC Stage 2. It's fine, but is the slightest bit grabby on engagement, but I'm certain it won't slip for quite some time. It will probably be available for sale in 6 months when I do my M30 swap. If you're looking for something now, I'd recommend a stock clutch disc, but the HD Sachs pressure plate. It should hold all you need it to and still offer stock engagement feel.

excellent. ill have this running in no-time. as for gearing im leaving the 2.93 for now. its in there, and i dont wanna tear apart the driveshaft again ill probably switch up to 3.73 when i can find one descent price, and do all the bushings under there to poly.. anyone know a good place to get cheap poly bushings? price is more important than quality at this point. i would go akg but its gonna run me just as much as the differential for them all im sure, lol. also people speak of the e21 mounts being awesome for the transmission.. where would i find those as well.. i seem to be having a problem sourcing some.
