Engine Fan and Revving: What is too much?

    '88 325is here.

    I've been wondering:

I live in a warm climate. My main engine fan (the one that is synchronous with rpm) operates on a frequent basis.

My main concern is this: sometimes, I gotta pull into traffic. However, I don't want to go above 4K with that engine fan in fear of damaging it or the fan clutch.

What's your take on this, r3v? Does the fan clutch have some sort of safety mechanism that prevents damage? Do you guys baby it when you hear the fan kick in?

    Best,

    Pete

this doesn't make sense. the clutch fan only locks when it heats up. the rest of the time it freewheels. or are you talking about the electric fan? how do you hear a clutch fan kick in?

in any case I've taken mine to 7500. I wouldn't worry about 4k..

I meant when it's locked when heated up and makes that "WOOOOO" noise as it runs up with the engine.

Didn't want to bust the fan clutch by going to high in the rpm.

The fan clutch is designed to slip if the load on it becomes too great.

Also, you can get fan clutches for practically nothing. Why are you worrying about a cheap and easily replaced part?

if bmw says the engine can rev to 6500-6700rpm stock, than all the parts attached to it are designed to handle that rpm. i wouldn't worry in the least.

and when your check engine & oil pressure lights come on, just cover them in black electrical tape. ;)
