    Balancing the M20 engine

Is it worth it? I was told the inline 6 does not benifit much.........Not a racing engine but I want a smooth running engine for the street. 1988 super eta

If done, do they need "bob" weights? Could the crank be done on its own?

    Thanks, Chuck

IIRC the engine should not need balancing. Ever. Unless you are doing some serious racing.

If your car wiggles while the engine idles, you might have a few vacuum/intake leaks.
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
      Mark: "You never will."

balancing can free up some power and make the engine more reliable, but on a street driven, stock-build engine - probably not worth it, unless your rebuilder is going to do for fun/free.

Blueprinting an engine (balancing, strict tolerance control, equal deck heights, etc) reduces parasitic losses, which is why we do that on a race engine. It will make a street engine run smoother, last longer, and get better fuel economy. I think the advantages are enough that I'm going to blueprint one of my spare engines for the 87 325is that I'm restoring. That car will only be a daily driver.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
