    85e to 89 2.7i tachometer

Does anyone know how to get the signal from a 1.3 DME to the tach on a older E chassis?

You need to find the wire in the bundle that has the tach signal and feed it to the connector that attached to the DME cable bundle originally.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I've tried that but I get nothing. The cluster is from an 90 i. I just swapped the speedo from my old one. Does it need any different coding plug?

Search for a thread by dashboardmonkey. Had the same problem and he helped me through it. There is a connector, forgot what it's called, that is in the dash near the ECU that leads to the tachometer and fuel economy guage. You need to run a new wire from the main engine harness in the engine bay to the connector in the dash.

Look up the wiring diagram for your chassis here http://www.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/, and the diagram from the donor engine. Connect the dots.
