    Would you run this cam?

I don't think I'll ever finish this 327 project. Bought this camshaft from another member and after two weeks of waiting this is what I received. My better judgement says "cool down, eat the $75 loss, pay for another cam and wait patiently" But goddamn I've been driving this fucking escort for close to two months and I just want to drive my babe again. Am I overreacting? Would you run this cam?

Kind of hard to tell if that's just a bit of surface rust/dirt or if there is wear/pitting. Clean it up with some steel wool, put some oil on for rust protection and snap a few more shots.

Absolutely not, it is a goner and would demand your money back if it was not disclosed it was a worn out one!

        It is pitted and flat...

no, the surface is severely scored, and the peaks of the cam lobes are worn down - just look at the big steps up to the unworn portion.

a new stock cam isn't that expensive

Well a new stock cam is $230, and I've already spent $900 on this head. So in that respect it isn't trivial. What a nightmare. This episode is making me looney. I feel like Chevy Chase in national lampoon's Christmas vacation. Oh to live in California, where the parts come cheap and you can *see* them before you buy them

Nah, we get screwed on used parts all the time too.

If you do get tempted to get that cam reground, do some homework and skip it, you'll need larger eccentrics, which is another $100.

wouldnt be the end of the world if u run it i dont think. its not perfect but its a cam and its in one peice and with the rocker eccentrics set at the correct tolerance there shouldnt be any extra play due the 1mm or so of wear.

no but you lose ~1mm of lift multiplied by the rocker ratio. performance isn't going to be good....

Hah. Yeah I was thinking about that - it might actually help with the p-v clearance since the head is .050" out of spec

Edit: I'm kidding by the way

My guess is the rocker pads are going to have a very short life.
At least get it polished. :(

                          $75 isn't much. Don't use it.

this is true but if he plans on fitting a 272 or 288 or whatever at a later date then this cam will be perfectly fine to get the car out of the garage and on the streets till then.

If I was planning to do that I would do it right now while everything is apart. I don't have the option unless I notch the pistons. See earlier post about p-v clearance
