    failed smog - rich idle

Failed Nevada smog - idle too rich. Fresh tank of gas and engine hot. Engine is a 1988 M20B25 with 80K miles. 19lb injectors with the MarkD chip for those.

The easy things to try seem to be:

    idle control valve
    O2 sensor
fiddle with air flow meter (if this can set the idle leaner)

    Any tips? Advice? Insults?

EDIT: The DME is not throwing any error codes; 1444 = clean, no faults

I'm sure Illinois is quite lovely. And by the way, your girlfriend is a dog. Oh, wait - that's your dog. Never mind.

The way to fix this would be to revert to the stock chip and injectors.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Switching to stock injectors and chip is also probably the cheapest way as well. Assuming your off idle testing was fine, then this switch will more than likely take care of your problem. Testing here in CA is pretty stringent and people with 19 lb injectors (including me) often notice the rich idle from them.

On a stock M20B25 I really don't understand why anyone would go to larger injectors. The stock fuel system is more than capable of 12.8-13:1 over the entire rev range. That is as rich as you want to run the engine.

Part of my reason was that I've got a few mods (including a cam), but I think a big reason for a lot of people might be costs/availability. The Ford 19lb injectors seem to be cheaper and easier to find in good condition.

The 19lb injectors and aftermarket cat are from the PO. Agree that there is no performance gain over the stock stuff.

I will post a WTB for stock injectors, prior to the other things listed in the original post.

When I switched to my Magnalfow cat I tested the emissions just for fun..

Failed idle emission for high HC. (rich).

I put the stock cat back on that night and retested the next day.

                  Passed with flying colors.

search my recent posts to see the actual data.
