can someone help me diagnose this?

Symptoms:
Lunging at idle 500-800 rpms
Drop to ~300 rpms when revs down freely
Lurch when going from deceleration to acceleration while in gear
Check light only at idle, never with load on the engine
No stuttering through rev band
somewhat poor drivability due to unpredictable hurky-jerky throttle response when starting/gear changes

Intake leaks are the most likely cause of this.

do a smoke test.

last time i had an intake leak i was stuttering around 3k and no check lights. still possible?

Your leak seems to be intaking.
Play with some carb cleaner around the bay.

Like ak said.. spray some carbulator cleaner or starter fluid, double check to make sure! i had same experience and were vacumms, and like a month ago after rebuild my heads and replace most seals my car was running slow as fuck! i sparay some carb cleaner and nothing.. double check and found a leak at the intake manifold gasket.. good luck
