OK, so it seems the deal is all about late model.

Wifes '89 E30 has the correct mounting bosses on the block. The motor I have to go into the E34 is an '88, way different casting.

Anyone have a late E30 motor for sale locally?

Just put your 87 engine in the 89 and put the 89 engine in the E34. Easy as pie. :)

only problem is that would leave us only the Astro to drive until I was done.

            Ain't happening.

Nor is the S50 going in the E34, just NO.

I will find a motor or fix the one I have.

What's wrong with the original engine?

Interesting... The engine I used to have in my Spec E30, which is now serving as a spare, came from a 1990 525i. The dipstick was the only problem I encountered. The motor mount arms swapped over just fine.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

My engine is also from a 525i. :)
I even god the E34 wiring harness to work in the E30. :)

Just because you suck at rebuilding cars, doesn't mean it's impossible..

Yeah, no worries putting a E34 motor in an E30, I am going the other way 'round..no bueno

Uh huh. Well, lemme see you suggestion on how to bolt the motor mount arms to nothing. As I just said, E34 engines fit E30's just fine, the issue here is the other way around.

Just because you suck at reading doesn't mean you are dumb, right?

                          Motor sourced, crisis averted.

Later E30s DO have the correct mounts.

That was quick, I was going to offer the bottom end of my m20 for a reasonable cost way ahead of transplant schedule. See what a nice guy I am
