it just couldnt wait another week(t-belt)

i had planned on a suspension overhaul, timing belt, water pump, and belts next week, but the car decided it couldn't wait another week. the timing belt snapped earlier tonight going down the road. wasn't going fast at all, motor was turning at about 1600rpm and there was a loud CRACK sound followed instantly by silence. It's sitting in a parking lot, i'm having it towed to my house tomorrow to start disassembling.
my question is how bad do you guys think the damage is, and how much of a pain in the ass is it gonna be, nothing ever goes the way it should with this car.
on the bright side, i'll be able to fix that nasty oil slick down the side of the block from the headgasket now :P
this sucks, i had just got it running great

    Gahhh that blows.
Hopefully you get everything back up and running with out a hassle and it runs better then before.

Judging by your engine speed, if that is accurate, you shouldn't have harmed anything. Usually the problem with timing belts doing damage is when they snap at higher speeds where the pistons, due to the rotation of the engine, continue to move up and down. The valves stay in the same place thus usually making contact. But if your rpms were low, I think maybe, just maybe you might get lucky. Easy way to tell if anything is damaged is to turn the cam pulley by hand and see if there are any obvious points of contact.

I think you'll be ok. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Oh and if you do have to pull the head, do yourself a favor and leave the intake and exhaust manifolds on. Not only do they make for easy handles in pulling the head off, you also will have an easier time taking thw manifolds off.

        Good luck

i'm going to pull the head reguardless. the headgasket leaking down the side of the block drives me nuts.
my biggest problem will probably be finding a wrench for the fan clutch nut, i dont have any that big, or anything that i can fit in there

go to advance auto and buy a 22mm gearwrench wrench.

If the car was moving and in gear when the belt broke you almost certainly will have bent valves and may have a broken rocker. The pistons will probably have survived. They'll be dinged up, but unless the damage is deep they'll be okay.

Pull the head, tear it down and see how bad the damage is. Then you can decide whether to get a used head or repair the one you have. Unless you get really lucky and find a head with less than 100k on it, the used head should should should be decked and get new seals at the minimum. Even a 100k head probably needs the valves and seats ground. So unless your head has a lot of damage you come just a well or better by having it lightly decked, the valves ground, new seals, and damaged parts replaced.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

a big crescent wrench works fine. it's not on there very tight.

Dont feel too bad. Bent valves always happen. O.K. , maybe 99.9999% of the time + all the planets would need to be aligned. How do your pistons look? Any substantial damage? If the bent valves didnt crack any valve guides or damage the head badly, you might be able to replace your bent valves and keep the head. Hope it all goes smooth.

check your cam towers, bad to crack. i just started a thread...M20 rebuild, that is my recovery. you will want to replace valve guides also. a valve bending kinda affects them. good luck...been there, am there...recovering as we chat.

i heard the word rain, and with my lack of a garage, decided that rain isn't gonna get in the way of me getting anything done this time

and finally, cleaned up the bay a bit
