intake rocker shaft spun 180* around...

as the title says, the intake rocker shaft spun around 180 degrees in the head, popping all of the rocker clips off, and putting the rockers off center. what the hell?!
i just replaced the timing belt, headgasket, 3 valves, and a rocker arm.
oh, and aparently it didn't like the victor reinz gasket, i'm assuming it's blown. compression is great(170+) on 3 cylinders, and shit(90, 50, and 40) on the other 3. head was resurfaced, and new bolts torqued to spec.
aside from that, it's leaking oil around the center intake gasket. not the tube, just the gasket somehow.

this thing is the bmw from hell
atleast it handled nicely for the little bit it was driveable yesterday.
new shocks, struts, balljoints, control arm bushings, swaybar bushings and endlinks.

there is a "key" that fits into the shafts at the front of the head in a little slot. it's probably missing. this also means your rockers aren't getting any oil, since the holes need to align.

How do the low compression cylinders compare to the ones you replaced mechanical components in? I've installed probably 100 HG sets from Victor Reinz. Rarely have I ever had an issue. The last with was one that was buggered up in shipping but I tried to use it b/c I didn't have time to wait for another.

there was no key in either shaft when i disassembled the head. both shafts were properly lined up when they were put back in

well, either way, you need the key.

You might not have compression in those cylinders due to a valve being open due to the rocker shaft issue.

i did a second compression test after putting all the rockers back in their places, with no real difference in results.

you may still have some bent valves...sounds like a new head is in the future.

I dont think the rocker shaft could cause a bent valve

Same. The only way I could imagine that is if the rocker retainers popped off, moved all the rockers off center and off the valve.

all of the retainers did pop off, and 4 out of 6 rockers were off center. the retainers just sitting in the head is what caught my eye first when i pulled the valve cover.
the notches for this retainer, clip, bracket or w/e yall prefer to call it don't look like it's been there for quite some time, if the piece was there, then the notches should be much cleaner, not golden brown like everything else.
if the peice hasn't been there, how in the hell did one of the shafts not spin around or move before?

I'm going through my head right now and the retainer clip and area were just as brown as everything else.

As far as the shafts not spinning without it? Thats what the retainers job is so I doubt they would make it far without it.

that still wouldn't bend a valve, because the valve would remain closed.

it's not going to keep all oil from getting in those grooves. the shop or whoever put it together probably just lost it.
