    headgasket question

i just put a new head on 89 ix and realized its leaking water on the new head gasket i just put on. so im guessing i fucked up torquing it down right. Can i get away with just new head bolts or do i have to get a new head gasket as well? never fired the car up or anything.

If this was a new, as in brand new, part I'd suspect that the gasket got damaged. But I suspect that this is a used head and that you didn't have it checked for warp or cracks before installation. Either way the head has to come back off and a new gasket and bolts used and the head needs to go to a machine shop.

That assumes that the leak is between the head and the block. This could be a leak at the thermostat housing, water pump, or heater port.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

head was resurfaced and there's nothing wrong with the gasket. can i re use the head gasket and just get new head bolts?

just how the instructions said 30nm, 90 degree turns x2. but then i took the head back off and used the same bolts. i just dont want to have to take the head off again. should i just take it off along with a new gasket and new bolts?

Wait it's leaking but you never ran it?

You reused the bolts after already torquing them?

Buy a new gasket, buy new bolts.

When installing a head a wise mechanic will only run the bolts up to initial torque (22ft-lb) and wait to angle torque the bolts until everything else has been done. That way if you discover that the head has to come back off the gasket and bolts can be re-used.

you can retension the belt just fine

you can't retorque the bolts though. you need new bolts and a gasket.

I just went to an AISC bolting seminar - it turns out, angle turning bolts are very forgiving. basically you can't really mess it up if you do the 22ft/lbs-90*-90*, even if you just eyeball the angle. +/- 10 degrees isn't going to make a lot of difference. it's leaking because you reused TTY bolts.

Serious? What a relief! That matches what I have always thought, but I bought a gauge anyway...

yeah. If it's good enough for skyscrapers and multi-billion dollar bridges, it's good enough for a $500 m20.

the only thing you can potentially screw up would be dirty threads or using the wrong sequence.
