    Timing question

Can anyone tell me how to retime an m20 after replacing the head, or point me to a thread that can?
    Thanks

line up the marks, put the belt on? :p

is the head already bolted down? it's better to set them both to TDC before you put the head on. it's still possible to do it otherwise, just harder..

While the head is off the engne, line up the timing marks on the cam sprocket and head. Then line up the timing marks on the crank hub and lower timing cover. Install the head and install the timing belt.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I had the forward most piston tdc then before putting my head on I aligned the marks on the gear to the head mark then placed it on and tightend my headbolts. I turn the car over manually but it feels like it is getting hung up about 3/4 the way through a full rotaion.

r your spark plugs in? take em out to manually turn over easier.

Yeah I took out the spark plugs. still gets hard to turn about 3/4 away around.

If you have the valve cover off and the plugs out, you can look into the chambers to see which pistons are nearing TDC, then see if the valves for that cylinder are lifting and interfering.

Either way, you can rotate the engine to check if the timing marks are lining up correctly on crank and cam sprocket.

Be carefull of the valves. Turn the cam sprocket alittle, then turn the crank alittle. keep doing that until you get both markings in line.

Sometimes when you get a head back from a machinist it's a good idea to turn the cam through one full revolution before mounting it on the block. Do this with the head sitting on its side. Just because the cam is aligned doesn't mean all the valves are in the correct positions. Taking it through one full revolution will make the valves all move one time while there is no pistons for them to run into. Since its on the block already you might try turning the cam in reverse for 1/4 to 1/3 turn ( don't force it if you feel it stopping because of interference). You should feel valves compressing when you do it. Then move the cam back to align the marks and then put on the belt. See if that works and let me know.

This past weekend I went ahead and put the radiator back in and connected all my hoses and put coolent in. Tried to crank it and it turns over without making any bad noises but now it wont crank. I think it might be the cap/rotor not connected right, or possibly the fuel lines are switched, also could be the new chip that i installed for 19# injectors. what do you guys think?
