Okay so Here is the final break down for anyone having the same problem.
your dme controls spark and fuel based on calculations once you try and crank the engine.
so If your car wont start due to no fuel, then you should also check for spark.
If it has no fuel and no spark but trys to crank then it very well may be a DME problem.

In my case the car would run for a while but once it was turned off sometimes would not crank again.

In the end the problem was solved by temporarily bypassing the dme relay, now it cranks up every time. tomorrow I will try and figure out the exact solution to the problem but now I know exactly where to look.

problem was found by running a volt tester on all fuses and relays while it was running
and comparing them to the results while it was trying to crank

thanks everyone who helped with any advice, and now Im finally on the home stretch to getting my e30 m3!!!!!

The DME relay is operated by the Start signal to the DME.. That signal comes from the ignition switch and goes to pin 27. The route that signal takes depends on the production date of the car. From 9/86-8/87 the Start signal is supplied through the 3 pin connector near the DME connector. On later cars it is routed through C101 and the engine harness.

A mad main relay, damaged socket, or a wiring fault are all possibilities at this point. But the first action is to ensure that pin 27 of the DME connector is hot when the ignition is on and when trying to crank the engine.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I will check that out later on today. for now the problem was solved by jumping the dme relay from the main relay. the down side is sometimes the car stays on once you turn the key off. I still need to look into that I guess.

If it has plastic bumpers it will be an 89 or later. You can plug in the last seven of the VIN at realoem.com to find out fro sure.
