Pete McHenry 2.7L Motor - Thoughts / Reliability?

I've been looking for a E30 325 for more than a year now and think I may have found one, but not having a deep understanding of M20 motors I wanted to get some perspective on the motor that's installed in it.

The current owner indicates it's a Pete McHenry-built 2.7L stroker. I've researched the late Pete McHenry and understand he's a legendary BMW motor builder, which (assuming there's proper documentation) makes the motor pretty desirable.

It apparently has been built with the appropriate cam, high-compression pistons, beefed-up fuel injectors, etc. and is reported to put-out shitloads of horsepower.

I could be wrong here (noob, remember?), but isn't a 2.7L an ETA engine? And wasn't it designed for economy versus performance? McHenry obviously liked this block for a reason. Can anyone explain why?

Also, does the high performance of the motor (e.g. cam, higher compression (12:1?) pistons, etc) pose maintenance issues that don't exist in say a 2.5L motor in an iS? I'm fearing the old adage - 'the candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long'. The current owner reports it's got 45K on it post-build and that all he's needed to do is change the oil. Is it realistic to assume that's all that will continue to be needed? Or does the nature of the motor require more 'care and feeding'?

The 325 I've been looking for will for the most part be a Summer / Autocross car and not a daily driver so I won't be logging thousands of miles a year. While I'm not apposed to twisting a wrench from time-to-time I found a reputable BMW shop called Body Werks here in the Detroit area that will likely maintain it so professional help is ready and close-by should I need it.

Not sure if you've looked for a super-clean 325 lately, but they're not terribly easy to find any more, so I'm pretty stoked about finally finding one like this (although the asking price is a tad high). Anyone else have a Pete McHenry-built engine in the 325? If so, can you comment on experiences??

Any thoughts, suggestions, insight, guidance, encouragement or warnings on what I could be getting myself into are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I hope there is documentation, Pete passed over a year ago. I have one of his engines in one of my M3's and alas it's just hersay at this point as I don't have the build sheet. So I don't know how it was built ie cams or pistons and so on.

2.7 liters doesn't mean it's an eta. it means it's been stroked. it doesn't have anything to do with the block.

maintenance/reliability should be the same as stock. it's not like it's going to be putting down 200whp more than the original engine - figure 40-50hp more.

That's a pretty sick car. If you can get it, GET IT.

I knew Pete through an independent BMW technician association and he was a great guy, and an absolutely top notch tech. I build my own motors, but if I were to pay someone to build a motor for me Pete would have been on the VERY short list of builders I would have trusted for the job. I have no knowledge of the rest of that car or it's maintenance but if it was maintained by Pete it will be in far better shape than most e30s you'll find for sale.

Update: I bought the car in question. Flew to Charlotte, NC, checked-it out and drove the 610 miles / 10+ hours home. It's sensational and made the trip without so much as a hiccup.

                      Glad you grabbed it!

I met Pete a decade ago, and he was a great fellow to chat with. My friend was building a J-stock E30 M3 and sent the motor to Pete after my rave reviews and some research of course. His car was so fast at the then brand new miller motorsports park in Utah that the other racers boo-hoood and black flagged the car. He was disqualified for removing the AC compressor and faulty AC comp bracket, and replacing it with ballast of the same weight. He had already had two brackets fail, and didn't feel like having a 20lb chunk of metal banging around under his car as it let go again.

Needless to say, Pete built great motor's and your a lucky dude!

I have a Pete McHenry 2.8L stroker, I can answer most of the questions you have about the motor or car. I'm good friends with John and Stu so if there is something I dont know I can ask them, but some things Pete never told anyone. Just PM me and ill be glad to help or answer questions.

EDIT: your 10.5:1 compression ratio and the car you got was not maintained by Pete himself, the motor was built for a customer
