    Timing off 1 tooth

So I've searched but couldn't find what i was looking for, so i figured I'd ask.

Im running an m20 stroker. 87eta bottom end and 89 I head.

I set the timing the other day but it was starting to worry me. When i set the belt, the bottom was TDC and the cam gear mark was lined up with the head mark. After tightening the tensioner, it seemed as if the head is off by a tooth. I've reset the timing a few times and it keeps doing the same thing. The tensioner and belt are new btw.

    What's the ish? Thanks guys

After you put on the belt you have to turn the crank through two complete revolutions by hand and make sure when the crank mark ( TDC ) is aligned again ( on it's 2nd time around ) so is the cam mark with the mark on the head. If it's off, remove the belt and start again. Be patient sometimes it takes a few attempts. Also helps to get a pick and clean any pieces of worn old belt from between the teeth on the crank sprocket. Kinda hard to see and get to the bottom part of it.

Be sure to put the belt on the crank first, then run it up to the cam sprocket with the tension on the right side, then run it down the left and over the tensioner. If you don't do it in this order, the timing belt can turn the cam when you put tension on it.

I had the same problem. The problem was even with the crank and cam on TDC and the marks lined up there was still slack on the gear side (one tooth) and it was super tight on the tensioner side. To fix it, I rotated the cam just slightly before the timing mark and then put the belt on, rotated the cam stretching the slack out of the belt until the marks were lined up again and then let the tensioner loose.

i think when i did mine i set the crank and tdc and moved the cam like half a tooth the opposite way and then once the belt was on i would move the cam to tdc and that would take all the extra tension out and leave you with them both in time
