I guess unless someone else has any other tricks up their sleeve im going to start removing the engine harness until I either find a break or exposed wire or have it all removed. At which point I will take the harness from the 90 and install that one.

Ya im pretty certain at this point. Im guessing the vibration wore off the coating somewhere and it finally grounded while she was driving to the picnic. I guess I'm just second guessing myself because I don't believe in my own skills enough to believe i have gotten myself to the core of this onion :?

Really? All the same symptoms? Even bank or odd bank? Maybe we can do tandem harness swaps haha

    We have a winner.

Used the light on the injector harness and the results were as follows:

Cyl 1: Clear and distinct flashing
Cyl 2: Solid and ON all the time with periodic brown outs but never went completely out
Cyl 3: Clear and distinct flashing
Cyl 4: Solid and ON all the time with periodic brown outs but never went completely out
Cyl 5: Clear and distinct flashing
Cyl 6: Solid and ON all the time with periodic brown outs but never went completely out

So at this point I have deduced that it is somewhere between the harness side of the C191 and the ECU.

Any advice for me? Anything else I can test first? I really don't want to tear this girls car apart unless I absolutely have to. This thing is the freshest E30 i have ever worked on.

I couldn't find a place that would sell me one so I rented out a set. I will probably buy one after though. Going out right now to see what happens.

Probably. They're sold under a few different brands including OTC.

I'd swap in a new harness.

Yes, they're really handy. It's just an LED that illuminates when it gets a signal from the DME. When plugged in it should pulse like the injector would.

I suspect it will remain illuminated like LJ851 suggested.

Rockers are good. I was suspecting that as well.

Well I changed the injector harness so it would have to be upstream of that connector. Any way to test for that?

Nope. We checked them. Even watched the top end with the engine running and cam cover removed.

Maybe. If Wishno had a noid light for a Bosch FI harness he could see this happening but he doesn't.
