Ok guys, i've searched and found nothing really helpful. So here I am creating a new thread. I have a 1990 325is, so it has the M20B25. It also has the 525 Bosch DME. I bought an ebay chip for some power gains. When i installed it, it gave me noticeable power and the rev limiter was raised to almost 7000 RPM. Everything was great, the car drove great. but the problem was, the check engine light came on. Fearing that it might hurt the car in anyway, I installed back the stock chip and the light was gone, so was the extra power, responsiveness and the rev limit was back to 6500. My question is, would running the ebay chip hurt the car in any way? i know i know i get what i pay for, so spare me the lecture. All I want to know is if it is still safe to use until i get enough money to buy the proper chip? thanks in advance.

if you want set it and forget it, go with markD, turner/Conforti, dinan, etc. if you want to tune your set up specific as you add more parts down the road go with miller. theres probably over 100 chip threads, in the archives, on the m20 alone.

They just read the other guy's chip and burn it onto a 50 cent blank, then sell it to you for $100 or whatever. Now do you feel ripped off?
Copying a chip won't magically add a check engine light.
The check engine light was most likely on because the ad says the chip is for the 173.

speaking from my own similar experiences I've seen all sorts of strange issues from a flash that didn't go quite right.
plus you're still directly supporting theft.
