I have had exhaust shops cut the cat off for me, inspect, then re-weld for no cost. There are two on the M20 though and it might not be a bad idea to get a price from a shop just to check them out, but I would do that after the easier things are checked.

Well now my car will barely start and I didn't change anything?

I doubt it's the cat. they don't often go bad. not that they cant, but BMW didn't skimp on E30 cats. the stainless steel shielding will usually rust away before the internal parts go bad..

Alright. But now my car is hard to start. It takes like 10 to 15 seconds to start then it sputters and black smokes for like 10 seconds and then it'll kinda straighten out. But its just terrible. I miss driving my e30....

You should still run a fuel pressure test to make sure you don't have a clogged fuel return line or feed line.

I had a similar issue and I actually had to get my car towed to my work ( I work at a garage)

                  It was the ignition coil

you used new parts, right? Not "good" used parts?

I think that dog in your engine bay may have had something to do with it.

Not suggesting you do that. Most exhaust shops can pressure test the system.

Oh well. Why would it be hard to start?

It might be a combination of items. Have you ohmed out the coil? You might have a failing coil as suggested. Doesn't happen often much like cat failures they rarely do except after impacts.

You are not just throwing parts at it are you? Have you tried testing items you have replaced prior to replacing them?
