    Identify my chip! + issues after reinstall

    Hey so ive always been wondering what type of chip I have on my e30. The previous owner says I have a chip that requires 91 octane fuel. It made sense because my redline seemed abnormally high. So yesterday while installing a non-broken glovebox I decided to pop the ecu open and check it out. Looks stock to me? The guy worked at a tuning shop so is it possible to just flash the chip?



    So after reinstalling it, i went for a test drive and all seemed well. But this morning on my 20 mile commute the car was acting retarded every 2-3 minutes of cruising at 65 mph the car would cut power and flash the check engine light super fast (less than half a second). Whats up? Did i mess it up? or the harness that attaches to it? Do i need a new dme? or could it be a fuel filter/pump/spark plug/wire issue?

    Anyone know if these chips are EPROMS? If so then it may have gotten messed up when exposed to light. That is why all EPROMS have stickers over the actual chip. Did you touch it at all?

    Either way, I would find another DME and swap it out to see if that is your problem.

      I'd be inclined to suspect something other than your opening the cover of the DME. Pull the codes from the DME and see what they point to.

        no codes on dme it doesnt stay on just flashes.

              The flash of the CEL means a fault was detected, in which case there will be stored codes, or that the DME had a power interruption, in which case there won't be any codes. Figuring out what to do next means first checking for stored codes.

                Actually, the window on the chip is for UV light... which erases it.
                Usually, one would cover that, just to be safe. But it takes a pretty high
                UV level to erase...

                That's a stock EPROM- whatever's on it, that's for computers to know.
                By stock, I mean that you could buy it at DigiKey and put anything on it.

                So from the outside, no tellin'...
