    yeah, definitely stop cranking it and take it apart. you might get lucky or you might not. just get in there and see whats going on..

      screwed either way

      sounds like the timing belt to me. If the top part of the engine is turning and the bottom is not that means the piece that joins them together is broke ie the timingbelt. Depending on how fast the engine was racing you probably have bent valves. :(
