Fuel pump or fuel pump relay?

I have had an intermittent starting issue with my 1990 325is for the last couple of weeks and it got to the point that it will not start after multiple times cranking. It sometimes will start and run for a bit but it will die within a minute or two. I can hear a clicking noise from the fuel pump and I was guessing it is probably this that is at fault. It has never been replaced.

I was searching the forum and found that the relay itself may cause this issue? It wasn't clear if this could cause the same issues I am having. If it is the pump itself, the best price I can find is Pelican

Can anyone confirm if this is all I need if it is indeed the fuel pump? Thanks for any help!

Does the "Check Engine" light come on when it dies?

Here is the deal: the main relay runs the DME and the fuel pump relay. If either the main relay or the fuel pump relay are crapping out you will get exactly the symptoms you describe.

Late model pumps suck, BTW, but you are stuck with it.

Not sure about the quality, but check out Amazon for fuel pump.

I'd reccomend to anyone with an E30, if your relays are original - just replace them all. you're saving yourself a headache.

I'd do the relays first, then the fuel pump. The late fuel pumps don't really suck, but the 2-pump system is better. that doesn't really help you, though. I replaced my pump with a brand new VDO, then realized it was a $10 relay. the original 225,000 mile pump was just fine.
