alright i have a fairly profound knocking noise while the car is idling coming from the front of the engine. when i grab any of the coolant hoses the rhythm of the noise goes with the feeling i have in my hand. the feeling is nowhere else on the engine. Am I safe to assume this is the water pump?
a water pump gone bad?

You could always disconnect the waterpump belt and start the car and see if the noise is still present. Or if you have a long screwdriver or mechanics stethoscope.

Any timeive had a water pump fail there's been a bunch of shaft play. If you can move the water pump pulley more than just barely its a safe bet to replace it. You can do it without taking the timing set off as long as you're careful, but you might as well do the tbelt too if its over 40k to save yourself hassles later.- Josh

I was really hoping someone would say it is possible to do without removing the timing belt since it has only been on the car for 4,000 miles and one year. Yes I know I should have replaced the water pump when I did the timing belt but I had already spent over 1500 in other parts for the car that were necessary so ya.sigpicComment
