    cranks

Looking into a 2.8 mabe a 2.9 stroker. With a distant future turbo prospect so am looking for a forged crank.

What is a reasonable price for a 524td crank?

also for shits and giggles, what would be reasonable for a ETA crank?

I searched and did not come up with much so some help putting me on track would be nice.

    Thanks
    RJ

I can tell you a price as far as the Eta crank goes. I paid $90 shipped for a nice one

The price for new diesel cranks from the dealer has gone up almost double in the past year. I would expect the used prices to reflect this withen the near future. Diesel cranks were in the $400 range I saw for used ones a couple years back.

        So I guess $150 for a S50B30 US M3 crank is a good deal over here? :D

luckily i got pretty cheap IMo keeping in imind that M3 are not that common, at least the US version.

Swap a 3.0 crank from a '95 M3. They run 3-400 used, are nitride-hardened, forged steel, and have an 85.8mm stroke (almost 1/4" more than a diesel crank!)

If you settle on going the 2.8L route, just get an Eta crank and call it a day. Although the TD crank is forged, they are harder to find and usually cost more. Like someone else mentioned, you can get the Eta crank for stupid-cheap money and there's tons of them available. Jordan used one for his 2.8 stroker and its holding well. Use the money you save on the crank and buy either a cam or quality oversized pistons.

The forged crank route would only be a good idea of you have aspirations to make your M20 rev to 7500+ or turbocharging.

              with a 324td crank (81mm throw) ... u aren't going to get a true 2.9lt... even running with 86mm pistons, it will be 2823.1cc...

              but running with a 328i M52 crank (84mm throw), and 86mm pistons...that will net u a true 2.9lt... 2927.7cc

I also wouldn't recommend using the S50B30 crank, just cause u have to either modify the counter weights to clear the inside of the block, or u have to modify the block... IMO it's not worth it too spend that much money on a stroker project... it would be better to do a swap with an S50B30... probab;y around the same price... cause it's really expensive to get the crank done (beaing in mind that u have to make sure it is perfectly balanced... thats the expensive part) Also getting the block engineered is also expensive, and I can assure u they won't guarantee that work

Even on a turbocharged M20 stroker there's not much need for the 524 crank, unless we're talking a LOT of boost. I'm runnign a standard Eta crank on a 2.7i turbo and it will be just fine.

If you can go where they let you pull parts yourself, an ETA crank should be practically free.

Wish we had places like that over here, that we could pull our own parts... :( but there is a place here that seems to have every E30 part I've been looking for... well except for when I was firts building my motor (I needed a ETA crank or 324td crank... which r both like chickens teeth over here, never got the ETA, and only our 325iS came with 324 crank... 2.7lt stroker from factory) .

I still think the best way to build a 2.9lt is with the 328i crank

whatever happens, it will be a nice step up from the 2.3 :)

what is involved in using the 95 m3 crank?

                          Hello, I have a 79 323i with a 90 m20 2.8 liter stroker and 524 td crank thats been knife edged.

What is involved in converting my stroker to use the 95 m3 crank?
I think I need to run m3 rods but will they work with this crank with minor sanding of the rods like diego did?

                          thanks
